چکیده

The simulations of field-evaporation processes for surface atoms on W(011) and Mo(011) surfaces are implemented using first-principles calculations based on the real-space finite-difference method. The threshold values of the external electric field for evaporation of the surface atoms, which are ∼ 6 V/Å for tungsten and ∼ 5 V/Å for molybdenum, are in agreement with the experimental results. Whereas field evaporation has been believed to occur as a result of significant local-field enhancement around the evaporating atoms, in this study, the enhancement is not observed around the atoms but above them and the strength of the local field is much smaller than that expected on the basis of the classical model.

First-principles calculations of the atomic and electronic structure of SrZrO3 and PbZrO3 (001) and (011) surfaces.

We present the results of calculations of surface relaxations, rumplings, energetics, optical band gaps, and charge distribution for the SrZrO(3) and PbZrO(3) (001) and (011) surfaces using the ab initio code CRYSTAL and a hybrid description of exchange and correlation. We consider both SrO(PbO) and ZrO(2) terminations of the (001) surface and Sr(Pb), ZrO, and O terminations of the polar SrZrO(...

First-principles calculations of atomic and electronic structure of SrTiO3 (001) and (011) surfaces

We present and discuss the results of calculations of surface relaxation and rumpling on SrTiO3 (001) and (011) surfaces. We consider both SrO and TiO2 terminations of the (001) surface, and three terminations (Sr, TiO and O) of the polar (011) surface. The calculations are based on hybrid Hartree-Fock and density-functional theory exchange functionals, using Becke’s three-parameter method, com...

Ab initio calculations of the atomic and electronic structure of CaTiO3 (001) and (011) surfaces

We present the results of calculations of surface relaxations, energetics, and bonding properties for CaTiO3 001 and 011 surfaces using a hybrid description of exchange and correlation. We consider both CaO and TiO2 terminations of the nonpolar 001 surface and Ca, TiO, and O terminations of the polar 011 surface. On the 001 surfaces, we find that all upper-layer atoms relax inward on the CaO-te...

Field-evaporation from first-principles

Under the application of a strong electric field, atoms from a metal surface can rupture their bonds and escape, leading to ‘field-evaporation’. We present a firstprinciples description of this phenomenon, taking as an example the evaporation of Al adatoms from an Al(111) surface. The ‘charged-plane’ method [A.Y. Lozovoi and A. Alavi, Phys Rev B 68, 246416 (2003)], has been implemented in the c...

Ab initio calculations of BaTiO3 and PbTiO3 (001) and (011) surface structures

We present and discuss the results of calculations of surface relaxations and rumplings for the 001 and 011 surfaces of BaTiO3 and PbTiO3 using a hybrid B3PW description of exchange and correlation. On the 001 surfaces, we consider both AO A=Ba or Pb and TiO2 terminations. In the former case, the surface AO layer is found to relax inward for both materials, while outward relaxations of all atom...
